Storms, Spiders & Springbank: Exploring Campbeltown’s High-Proof Soul at the HKJC E105 Lounge
May 13, 2026

We returned to the E105 Lounge at the Hong Kong Jockey Club for another chapter in our regional discovery series: Scotch Whisky Journey – Tastes of the Regions: Campbeltown. Once celebrated during the Victorian era as the undisputed "Whisky Capital of the World" with over thirty bustling distilleries, Campbeltown today is Scotland’s smallest and most fiercely characterful protected whisky region.
Against the backdrop of live race-night broadcasts, our presentation introduced members to the fundamental Five "S" Rule—See, Swirl, Smell, Sip, and Savor—equipping everyone with the sensory tools needed to tackle the intense proofs and distinct coastal profiles of this historic peninsula.
To showcase Campbeltown’s oily, maritime, and uncompromised spirit DNA, we curated a high-proof flight pitting a rare young single-malt powerhouse against an artisanal blended malt expression:
1. Springbank 5 Year Old 100° Proof (Campbeltown | 57.1% ABV)
The Distillery Heritage & Craft: Established in 1828 and operated by J.&A. Mitchell & Co., Springbank is a cult icon of traditional Scotch whisky making. Handling 100% of its production on-site—from traditional floor maltings to distillation and bottling—this rare 5-year-old release was bottled at traditional British 100° proof (57.1% ABV) to showcase raw distillery character.
The Profile: Oily, vibrant, waxy, and unapologetically coastal.
The Experience: Pouring pale gold, the nose greeted guests with an immediate burst of lemon oil, fresh sea spray, wet slate, and faint industrial peat smoke. On the palate, the 57.1% ABV cask strength carried an astonishingly thick, waxy viscosity, delivering raw malted barley, orchard fruits, and crushed sea salt before resolving into a long, warming finish accented by white pepper and gentle campfire soot.
2. The Gauldrons Cask Strength Limited Edition – Douglas Laing (Campbeltown | 52.8% ABV)
The Story & Blending Curation: Crafted by independent specialist Douglas Laing, The Gauldrons ("bay of storms") takes its name from the treacherous cove on Campbeltown’s western shores where Robert the Bruce was famously inspired by a spider’s persistence. Bottled at a natural cask strength of 52.8% ABV, this limited release marries standout single malts from the peninsula.
The Profile: Salty sea breeze, mouth-coating manuka honey, and gentle smoke.
The Experience: The nose opened with sweet cereal sweetness, dried seaweed, candied orange peel, and maritime brine. On the palate, a lush, mouth-coating blanket of rich manuka honey and caramelized sugar balanced effortlessly against coastal salt air, warm cinnamon, and a lingering puff of beach bonfire smoke.
The room was buzzing as members applied the Five "S" method to contrast the two drams—analyzing how just a few drops of water tamed Springbank’s high-proof waxy muscle while unlocking the rich honeyed layers of The Gauldrons. The session demonstrated that despite its small geographic footprint, Campbeltown commands an unmistakable, rugged identity that has captured the hearts of serious whisky lovers worldwide.
A heartfelt thank you to the entire Hong Kong Jockey Club team for their hospitality, and to all the members whose fantastic energy, sharp questions, and adventurous palates made the evening so memorable.
May your picks storm home like Atlantic gales down the final straight, and may your glass always carry the stubborn grit and golden heart of Campbeltown—Slàinte, high-proof pours, and winning tides!
