We returned to the E105 Lounge at the Hong Kong Jockey Club for the next chapter in our regional series: Scotch Whisky Journey – Tastes of the Regions: Lowland. While the Scottish Lowlands are historically celebrated as the gentlest whisky landscape—often associated with delicate, grassy, and floral profiles—this masterclass challenged members to discover how contrasting distillation physics and wood chemistry redefine the region.

Taking members from the industrial banks of Clydebank to Scotland’s southernmost riverways, our presentation deconstructed production mechanics, spirit character, and cask selection across two distinct Lowland philosophies:

1. Auchentoshan 10 Year Old – Douglas Laing Old Particular (Lowland | 48.4% ABV)

  • The Distillery Craft & Independent Curation: Sourced from single refill barrel #DL18160 by family bottler Douglas Laing and yielding just 298 bottles, this single cask showcases Glasgow’s signature malt without chill-filtration or added colour. Founded in 1823, Auchentoshan ("corner of the field" in Scottish Gaelic) stands as Scotland's only distillery to triple-distill 100% of its single malt spirit, yielding an exceptionally pure, light distillate.

  • The Profile: Clean, floral, and vibrant.

  • The Experience: The nose opened with fresh summer peach, fragrant manuka honey, and soft dollops of cream. On the palate, an initial flash of warming spice shifted swiftly into a refreshing citric tang and mouth-coating candy sweetness, finishing crisp, elegant, and light.

2. Bladnoch 16 Year Old – The Galloway Collection (Lowland | 46.7% ABV)

  • The Distillery Heritage & Curation: Established in 1817 on the banks of the River Bladnoch, this historic site is celebrated as Scotland's southernmost distillery. Released as an integral part of The Galloway Collection under CEO Glen Gribbon (former Marketing Director of The Macallan), this 16-year-old expression completely subverts the traditional light Lowland style through intensive maturation in Oloroso sherry casks.

  • The Profile: Decadent, dark, and intensely sherried.

  • The Experience: Pouring rich natural amber, the nose greeted guests with aromatic wood spices, plump raisins, sultanas, orange peel, and dark chocolate. The palate delivered concentrated layers of moist fruitcake, stewed dried fruits, sweet cinnamon, and melted cocoa, offering an opulent, velvety weight that easily rivals classic Highland sherry benchmarks.

The side-by-side tasting sparked lively debate across the lounge tables, contrasting the triple-distilled floral lift of Auchentoshan against the dense, fruitcake-laden sherry muscle of Bladnoch. It demonstrated that Lowland whisky cannot be confined to a single definition—its modern identity spans from gossamer-light aperitifs to profound, full-bodied sherry masterpieces.

A sincere thank you to the Hong Kong Jockey Club team for their hospitality, and to all the members whose curiosity and sharp palates continue to make our masterclass series an absolute joy to host.

May your horses glide with the smooth elegance of a triple-distilled dram, and may your finishes always be as rich and commanding as a sixteen-year sherry cask—Slàinte, southern breezes, and champion strides!
